The Walmgate Recycling and Training Centre is the heart of bicycle recycling in Yorkshire: at any one time we have around about 400 bikes waiting to be refurbished. At the moment we are collecting 2,500-3000 bikes per year.
We are in our 9th year of recycling and it will be our 10th anniversary on October 6th 2016! Watch out for the big party!
We are really experienced at how to make the best use of the bikes people donate to us. We make a judgement about what is economic and safe for us to refurbish and then use parts stripped from other bikes to bring them back to life.
For all that a bicycle is a simple machine, it also leaves the rider very vulnerable and can achieve great speeds, so it’s extremely important that it runs smoothly and that all the parts function well. We pride ourselves in having high standards, which is quite a task given the state of some of the bikes we get in.
All the bikes which we cannot refurbish are stripped for parts, which are available to purchase. Some things are in short supply such as ‘saddles without holes’ (!), other things, such as front mountain bike wheels, we have a glut of.
